Set in the Chambal valley during the 1970s Emergency era, Sonchiriya explores the lives of a group of dacoits, or "baaghis" (rebels), led by Maan Singh (Manoj Bajpayee). His lieutenants Lakhna (Sushant Singh Rajput) and Vakil (Ranvir Shorey) grapple with their moral dilemmas, while a relentless cop, Virender Gujjar (Ashutosh Rana), hunts them down. The story takes a sharp turn when they encounter a woman (Bhumi Pednekar) seeking help for a sick girl, unraveling hidden truths and moral conflicts as the plot shifts between past and present.
Director Abhishek Chaubey offers a fresh, realistic take on Bollywood's fascination with dacoits. While the film mythologizes their high moral code and adherence to caste lines, it also deglamorizes their lives, presenting them as gritty and full of hardships. The dialogue in the Bundelkhandi dialect adds authenticity, though it might be challenging for some audiences.
Chambal's harsh landscape is captured vividly by Anuj Rakesh Dhawan's cinematography, becoming a metaphor for the characters' struggles. The relentless action, with bullets flying throughout, complements the intense narrative.
The film features exceptional performances:
Manoj Bajpayee shines as the guilt-ridden rebel leader.
Sushant Singh Rajput excels as the principled baaghi torn by inner conflict.
Ranvir Shorey impresses as the impulsive and passionate Vakil.
Bhumi Pednekar delivers a strong portrayal of a fearless woman driven by conviction.
The supporting cast of lesser-known actors also adds depth.
Overall, Sonchiriya blends action, caste politics, and karmic themes into a gripping dacoit drama. With powerful performances and a raw, authentic feel, the film is a must-watch for fans of intense, thought-provoking cinema.
