In *Ventilator*, directed by *Harsh Chhaya*, the focus is on a dysfunctional family coming together in the face of a crisis, centered around the life of Devender, who’s in a coma and placed on a ventilator. As the family members from different parts of India converge in Mumbai, the film delves into their misadventures, quirks, and private struggles while they wait for any sign of improvement in Devender’s condition.
The writing captures the essence of familial dynamics with humor and relatability. Each family member brings their own baggage and traits to the table—whether it’s Ravinder (Vinay Pathak) focusing on getting cheaper air tickets, Lalita (Dolly Ahluwalia) seeking spiritual solace, or the wife dealing with anxiety and stress through constant eating. The dysfunctional family members still share a deep love for each other, despite their eccentricities.
*Harsh Chhaya*, making his directorial debut, uses exaggerated humor and slapstick comedy, which works well for a lighthearted take on a potentially heavy situation. Though the film is based on the Marathi movie *Ventilator* (2016), Chhaya's adaptation turns it into a more comedic, over-the-top narrative. While it may lack the emotional depth of the original, the film excels in delivering humor through cheeky dialogues and strong performances.
The ensemble cast is a major strength, with *Manoj Pahwa* and *Seema Pahwa* (playing a married couple) bringing authenticity to their interactions, and *Dolly Ahluwalia* and *Vinay Pathak* further enriching the family dynamic. *Sanah Kapur* is a delight as Nayantara, the Bollywood-aspiring daughter, adding freshness and energy to the story.
If you're in the mood for an OTT comedy with genuine performances and relatable family moments, *Ventilator* offers an enjoyable watch. It’s light, funny, and filled with quirky characters, making for a good time if you're looking for something humorous with heart.
