**Review Summary: *Soorma***
*Soorma* chronicles the remarkable journey of Sandeep Singh, a talented drag flicker whose career faced a devastating halt when he was accidentally shot in 2006. Paralyzed from the waist down, Sandeep's determination and resilience led him back to the hockey field, ultimately captaining India to victory in the 2009 Sultan Azlan Shah tournament. Directed by Shaad Ali, the film captures the essence of his inspiring comeback, blending emotion and sport with cinematic finesse.
Set against the earthy backdrop of Punjab, *Soorma* excels in authenticity, with Chirantan Das’s cinematography beautifully showcasing the region’s natural charm. The recreation of hockey matches feels dynamic and genuine, a testament to the meticulous choreography. While the film avoids a deep critique of Indian sports administration, it subtly highlights systemic issues, leaving viewers to draw their own conclusions.
Diljit Dosanjh shines as Sandeep, portraying both his physical struggles and emotional growth with sincerity. From the immature, self-centered youth to the determined athlete who finds purpose, Diljit’s performance captures the nuances of a flawed yet inspirational hero. His chemistry with Taapsee Pannu, who plays his love interest and a fellow hockey player, adds emotional depth to the narrative. Taapsee’s restrained yet impactful performance complements Diljit’s, especially in moments of heartbreak and resolve. Angad Bedi impresses as Sandeep’s steadfast elder brother, while Vijay Raaz and Satish Kaushik add texture with their stellar supporting roles.
Shaad Ali’s direction ensures that the story resonates on a personal level, making the audience invest in Sandeep’s journey. However, the film’s linear storytelling feels predictable at times. A non-linear approach, hinted at but abandoned, might have added more dramatic intensity. Editing, too, could have been tighter to enhance the pacing. While Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s soundtrack is competent, it lacks the stirring quality that such a story demands.
Despite minor flaws, *Soorma* is an inspiring tale of resilience, love, and redemption. It celebrates one of the greatest comebacks in Indian sports history and leaves viewers with a renewed admiration for the human spirit and the game of hockey.
